When buying tools, consider them an investment! Always try to buy tools with a lifetime guarantee from a trusted source (Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, Etc.)

1. Safety Glasses- PLEASE! Always wear approved eye protection! PLEASE!

2. FLashlights- Large and SmallFeatures to look for:

I like the rechargable, but HAVE SOME battery operated ones also. Don’t forget to have extra batterys on hand!

It’s not easy to be a Handyman in the dark!

3. Screwdrivers-Flat head and Phillip’s head

Please! Do NOT use screwdrivers to pry or chisel.

Features to look for:

Round shank for installing locksets (this will cut down on the likelihood of scratching the knob sets as square shank are prone to do), Square shanks for applying a wrench to gain greater torque.

Purchase an assortment of sizes. You’ll be a glad handyman if you do!

4. Hammer- 16 ounce with curved claw

Features to look for:

Fiberglass handle (will not rot)
You might want to add a framing hammer and a ball-peen (or ball-pein) hammer. “If I had a hammer…I’d be a handyman in the mornin’ , I’d be a handyman in the evenin’….all over this…”

5. Tape Measure- Power return, 25 foot, that can be extended several feet without bending and a small tape (at least 3 foot long, although I prefer the 10 foot length) measure to carry with you at all times

Features to look for:

Power return, Nylon-coated hardened steel blade to resists abrasion and wear for long life, Built-in shock absorber to protect blade tip, True zero feature for accurate inside and outside measuring, Durable steel belt clip for convenience, Multi-riveted end hook with bottom blade protector that reinforces the blade tip and provides maximum pull-out strength.
You might want to add a WOOD or Fiberglass Folding Rule-

Features to look for:

Black markings on yellow, with red stud center markings every 16 inches, Measurements marked on both sides and both edges, graduated to 1/16th inch, Engraved graduations on both sides. Sometimes a handyman needs a tape measure just to measure his tape.

6. Pliers- Slip joint pliers, Long-Nose Pliers (needle nose) and Wire cutting (Side-Cutting Pliers (lineman’s) and Diagonal-Cutting Pliers, Pump-Pliers (channel), Locking (Vice Gripping), End-Cutting Pliers (nippers)

Features to look for:

Ease of operation, Cushioned handles

7. Level- 4 foot, 2 foot, and small Magnetic Torpedo Level

Features to look for:

Strong, die-cast aluminum frame, built-in hang hole, Top-read level window for viewing in tight areas. Handy V-grooved edge for pipe and conduit work, High impact acrylic vials to read plumb (vertical), level (horizontal), and 45°, Machined edges for accurate readings.

A Real Handyman must be on the level.

8. Pencils-Quality really counts here!

Features to look for:

Flat “carpenter’s” or handyman’s pencil and the special sharpener that goes with it. A true handyman knows it’s better to have a short pencil than a long memory

9. Assortment of Nails, Screws, and Washers

Features to look for:

Prepackaged sets of basic sizes or get a small or medium divided box and put together a custom assortment that will come in handyman.

10. Utility Knife-Please, Please, Please

This is NO joking mater Please, Please, Please Be EXTREAMLY CAREFUL when handling a Utility Knife; you can cause serious injury or even death to Yourself or some one working near you when handling a Utility Knife!!!

Features to look for:
